Research materials

This page has downloads, or links to downloads, of materials useful for hypnosis research. Like any area of academic research it's best to observe somebody else perform a test before you have a go yourself, and this is especially true for tests involving the induction of hynosis. In the UK training in hypnosis for research is provided by the Hypnosis Unit UK, for training worldwide see the links page.

Hypnotic suggestibility scales

John Kihlstrom's website has links to downloadable original copies of the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility and the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, as well as versions of the scales with modifications as used by his lab. There are also some other useful materials such as scripts for building rapport before the induction of hypnosis, and an example of a submission to an ethics committee.

The Creative Imagination Scale (CIS: Barber & Wilson, 1978) is a 10-item test of 'imaginative suggestibility'. As such, it does not involve a hypnotic induction but instead looks at responses to suggestion in the absence of hypnosis.

Scales which have been thought to correlate with hypnotic suggestibility

See the measurement page for more information about correlates of hypnotic susceptibility.

The Tellegen Absorption Scale (Tellegen & Atkinson, 1974) is a 34-item questionnaire which measures the capacity to become absorbed. John Kihlstrom's website has a useful page of information on the TAS.

The Dissociative Experiences Scale (Bernstein & Putnam, 1986) is a 28-item scale measuring dissociative experiences. This paper suggests that modifications to the scoring scale might generate more normally-distributed results.
