About

This site was created by Dr Matthew Whalley. I studied with Professor David Oakley at the Hypnosis Unit in the Department of Psychology, University College London, and was awarded my Ph.D in 2004 (the title of my thesis was 'The psychology and neuroanatomy of functional pain'). I have since completed a postdoctoral fellowship as part of a team running a series of studies investigating emotional memories in patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I'm currently completing my training as a Clinical Psychologist.

Generally, hypnosis isn't well served by the web: there is a lot of inaccurate information and many misleading claims. When I set the site up in 2007 the key resource for people seriously interested in hypnosis was the (now sadly defunct) database of scientific papers at hypnosis-research.org. The aim of this site is to provide accessible summaries of clinical and research applications of hypnosis. My particular research focus has been neuroimaging work but I'm interested in all kinds of investigations using hypnosis.

Contact & feedback

I like feedback so feel free to get in touch using the form below. I'm particularly interested to know what aspects of hypnosis you want to find out about, and whether they found what they were looking for on the site.
